Maria Sakkari had a remarkable 2021 season, wherein she managed to reach the semi-finals of the French Open, US Open, WTA Finals and broke into the top-10 of WTA rankings for the first time in her career. She finished the year ranking No.6, sixteen places above her year-end ranking from the previous year. She won her opening match in Melbourne against Tatjana Maria 6-4, 7(7)-6(2) and defeated Qinwen Zheng 6-1, 6-4 in the second round.

Veronika Kudermetova won her first WTA singles title last year at the Charleston Open following which she entered into the top 30 of the WTA rankings for the first time. In the first round here at the Australian Open she defeated Claire Liu 6-4, 6-4 and Gabriela Ruse 6-2, 7-5 in the second round.

Kudermetova had better match practice compared to Sakkari, she finished as runner-up to Simona Halep at the WTA Melbourne (Summer Set 1), whereas Sakkari played only two matches before the Australian Open. She won against Tamara Zidanesk in the first round of the WTA Adelaide International 2 before losing to Shelby Rogers in three sets in the next round.

Both the players are big servers and have an aggressive playing style, so the match might go the distance. While the Russian has been in better form this year, Sakkari won their only hard court meeting and has more experience compared to Kudermetova in the singles.
