In the hunt for his 2nd Australian Open title and 21st career Grand Slam title, Rafael Nadal is all set to begin his quest at the first Grand Slam of the season. The Spaniard has started his season in a splendid manner winning the Tour title in Melbourne, his 89th career title. He chose not to participate in the second week of the Tour to not risk his fitness as he is raring to go at the Grand Slam where apart from his 2009 Australian Open victory, he lost on 4 occasions in the finals.

Marcos Giron has not enjoyed the start of the 2022 season as the American is yet to win a single set this season. He started the season at the Tour event in Melbourne where he lost to Richard Berankis and then played the Tour event in Sydney where he lost to local lad Jordan Thompson in straight-sets again and will take the court against Nadal with a 0-2 record as compared to Nadal’s 3-0 record this season.

Rafael Nadal vs Marcos Giron: Prediction

Rafael Nadal will be a favourite at the Australian Open 2022
Rafael Nadal

Nadal will come into the tie with a career hardcourt record of 262-62 and was 5-2 on the surface last season while he finished the 2021 season with a record of 24-5 across all surfaces. Marcos will take the court with a career hardcourt record of 213-128 and was 12-10 on the surface last season and had a 33-24 record for the season across all surfaces.

Looking at these numbers and considering their form in the 2021 season, Nadal looks the clear favourite after his title in Melbourne and Giron’s struggles so far this season and it should be a comfortable win for the Spaniard.

Prediction: Rafael Nadal to win in straight-sets.
