Victoria Azarenka struggled with her form and injuries hampered the start of her 2021 season. She was knocked out in the first round itself at the Australian Open and was forced to withdraw with a lower back injury at the Dubai Duty-Free Tennis Championship. This start did not affect her clay-court season, as she reached the fourth round at the Roland Garros, only losing to eventual runner-up Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. The Belarusian season ended with a runner-up finish at the Indian Wells in October.

Panna Udvardy will be making her debut at the Australian Open this year. In fact, this is the first time she will be playing in the main draw of any Grand Slam. She has a career-high ranking of 96 which she achieved in November last year.

She lost in the quarter-finals in three sets to former French Open champion Iga Swiatek from Poland. With two match wins under her belt and her only loss being to a higher-ranked opponent, the 2012 champion will be looking to begin her campaign at the opening slam this year with a win.
