Australian Open is a ‘Great Success’ WITHOUT Novak Djokovic says premier of Victoria state Dan Andrews
Novak Djokovic and Daniel Andrews
We are into the second week of the Australian Open and Novak Djokovic even while not participating is still a talking point. The premier of Victoria Daniel Andrews has called this year’s Australian Open to be a ‘Great Success’ without Djokovic.
The world No.1 was given the medical exemption by the Victorian State Government itself and this turn of events suggests a change of mind. Djokovic was deported back home due to an order passed by the Immigration Minister in the Federal government.
However, Andrews statement attacking Djokovic and calling the Australian Open 2022 a ‘Great Success’ seems to be misinformed. The viewership of this year’s Australian Open might be good, but it has taken a huge hit with two of the big three missing.
Is Australian Open 2022 a ‘Great Success’ without Novak Djokovic?
Novak Djokovic wasn’t allowed to participate in the Australian Open 2022 because of his vaccination status. But his two trials received the attention of people who’ve never followed tennis in their lives.
Looking at the viewership of his trials it was suggested that if Djokovic was to play in the Australian Open, there are going to be a lot of viewers watching tennis for the first time. However, Djokovic was deported and didn’t get to participate in the Australian Open. This didn’t only take the first-time viewers away, but also took the millions of Djokovic fans who are boycotting the tournament.
We are into the Quater-Finals of the Australian Open and the fans have witnessed some exciting tennis in the past week. We’ve seen favorites cruising and Huge Upsets as well. All in all, it has been a roller-coaster ride. We have just 16 players left, some of them were expected to come this far and some weren’t.
However, despite all this the world’s No.1 Djokovic still remains a talking point at the Australian Open. The premier of Victoria Daniel Andrews attacked Djokovic in one of his interviews. He said, “The tournament’s happening without him. And it’s a great success.”
This statement might be a bit misinformed considering the number of fans and first-time viewers that the Australian Open lost due to Djokovic’s absence. However, the tournament has been a success in terms of captivating tennis, but the inclusion of Djokovic would’ve only improved the situation in terms of viewership.
