Azarenka has played in only five tournaments this year. She started the new year with a Quarter-final finish at the Grampians Trophy. Up next was the Australian Open where she lost in the first round. After that first round debacle, she took to the court at the Qatar Open. In Qatar she played some fantastic tennis to book her place in the Semi-finals, but a back injury forced her to withdraw from the tournament.
Azarenka played her fourth tournament at Miami, where she lost in the round of sixteen to Ash Barty. At the Madrid Open she again withdrew from her Round of Thirty-two match against Jessica Pegula, once again with a lower back problem. In the first round of the French Open she beat veteran Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova in three sets, 6-4 2-6 6-3. She will be up against eighteen year old Clara Tauson of Denmark.
Tauson has already won a tournament on tour, the Lyon Open in March this year. In the finals she beat Viktorija Golubic 6-4 6-1. Apart from that she also reached the Quarter Finals of the Charleston 2. In Parma though she lost in the first round to Kateřina Siniaková. In the French Open, she overcame qualifier Ekaterine Gorgodze in the first round.

A former semi-finalist at the French Open, this two time Grand Slam winner, Azarenka definitely has the game to beat anybody on clay. But the injuries are beginning to affect her game and the back is beginning to become a real problem.
Can she or will she be able to sustain her levels after only a day’s rest, that is the real question? Tauson is a decent player and she will not hesitate to take advantage if she gets the chance. Azarenka should win this tough.
