‘Becker imminent?’: Italian media thinks Boris Becker to become Jannik Sinner’s new coach after Piatti split

Jannik Sinner

World No. 4, Stefanos Tsitsipas proved too good for World No. 10 Jannik Sinner in their quarter-final meeting at the 2022 Australian Open with Stefanos winning the match 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 in 2 hours and 6-minutes on a packed Rod Laver Arena to qualify for the semi-finals yet again at Melbourne Park.

While many expected a battle between the two upcoming stars, Tsitsipas steamrolled past the Italian to make his way into his consecutive semi-finals at the Grand Slam without breaking a sweat.

Jannik Sinner and Italian coach Riccardo Piatti have reportedly split up and decided to go their own ways according to the Italian media. The pair have been together since coaching guru Piatti accepted a 13-year-old Sinner into his academy, and has since turned him into one of the top players in men’s tennis.

After the imminent split, media outlet Gazzetta Dello Sport has reported that the legendary Boris Becker is in consideration to be the new coach of the Italian. The former World No.1 is a legend of the game, having won 6 Grand Slam titles in his career.

The German was formerly the coach of World No 1, Novak Djokovic, and the Serb won 6 Majors in the three years that the two collaborated starting from 2013. However, Becker has not worked as a coach in the professional tour since his split with Djokovic back in 2016.

Sinner is a player who has the ability and attributes to be the best player in the world. Under coach Piatti, while Sinner has become one of the best in the world, the Italian is yet to reach even the final of a Grand Slam event and has not yet challenged for the biggest of honours in the world of tennis. Thus, despite winning seven out of eight matches in 2022, Jannik will seek other options and continue his tennis journey with a different coach in his box, as he and Riccardo mutually agreed to end their successful collaboration.
