Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic makes it to the finals of the Women’s Singles and Women’s Doubles at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. Belinda was up against Kazakstan’s Elena Rybakina in the Singles semi-finals and went on to defeat her in a tightly contested 3-setter winning the tie 7-6(2), 4-6, 6-3 in 2 hours and 44 minutes.

Bencic had a hard fight in the semi-finals against Rybakina and upon winning the match-point broke down in tears overwhelmed with the emotions. While she had to dig deep in her first semi-final of the day, she looked flawless in the Women’s Doubles semi-finals partnering with compatriot Viktorija Golubic winning the semi-finals rather easily.

Up against Australians Samantha Stosur and Ellen Perez, the Swiss ladies needed just 1 hour and 23 minutes to win the match 6-4, 6-4 and reach the finals of the Doubles and guarantee themselves a medal. This will be the 2nd consecutive Women’s Doubles finals at the Olympics where a Swiss team will be contesting for the Gold Medal, Timea Bacsinszky and Martina Hingis won the Silver at 2016 Rio Olympics.

Belinda could join Serena Williams and Venus Williams as the 3rd Olympian to win the Gold medal in Singles and Doubles in the same Games. Venus accomplished the feat at the 2000 Sydney Olympics winning the Singles match against Russia’s Elena Dementieva and the Doubles with sister Serena, the first of their three Doubles gold.

Serena followed the suit in the 2012 London Olympics, winning the Women’s Singles by defeating Russian Maria Sharapova in the finals and defending her Women’s Doubles Gold from the 2008 Beijing Olympics with Venus by beating Czech Republic’s Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka in the finals, their 3rd Gold in Women’s Doubles.

With history on the line, Belinda will have to overcome the challenge of Marketa Vondrousova in the Singles finals and then go on to defeat Czech Republic’s Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova, the winners of Women’s Doubles at the 2021 French Open.
