‘Can’t wait for your comeback,’ Bianca Andreescu returns to training at the Rafael Nadal Academy ahead of WTA Stuttgart Open
Bianca Andreescu
Former World No. 4 Bianca Andreescu is all set to return on tour after a long injury layoff. The Canadian will be seen in action after receiving a wild card in the WTA Stuttgart Open. In the buildup to that claycourt event, Andreescu was recently seen training at the Rafael Nadal Academy in Mallorca.
The tournament’s official handles have already confirmed that the youngster will feature in the WTA Stuttgart Open as one of the wildcards. Andreescu will be featuring as the wildcard along with German local players Laura Siegemund and Jule Niemeier. Apart from that, the tournament will also feature star players like US Open champion Emma Raducanu, and World No. 1 Iga Swiatek. Four time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka was also in contention but the Japanese decided to take some time off after her run to the finals at the Miami Open.
However, fans were very excited to see the 2019 US Open winner training at the Rafael Nadal Academy in Mallorca as the Canadian posted pictures from her training. She was pictured with Fabrice Santoro, a former ATP player who is helping the youngster to train in Mallorca under great facilities.
Andreescu was hailed as one of the upcoming talents when she shocked everyone and won the US Open in 2019 as she went on to beat Serena Williams in the finals. However, it has been a downhill experience for the 21-year-old with injuries, illness and mental health issues. But the youngster still has age on her side and will be looking to get back to where she belongs in no time.
Bianca Andreescu finally getting started this year at the WTA Stuttgart Open
After she won the US Open in 2019, she was on cloud nine as it was a shock for the tennis fraternity as they could not believe the youngster winning against Serena Williams. But her success was very short-lived as she suffered injury problems which did not help in her growth as a player.
The 21-year-old missed the start of the 2020 season due to a knee injury. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic did not help her cause either. With things resuming again, Andreescu decided against returning that year. She made a comeback at the Australian Open in 2021 but unfortunately was knocked out in the second round.
She played good tennis in Miami Open and reached the finals but had to retire mid-game and ultimately ended up as the runners up to Ashleigh Barty. She then had COVID-19 and missed the following tournaments and after that, she had some decent runs but mostly they were not noteworthy performances from the former World No.4. She even skipped this year’s Australian Open as she opened up on her mental health issues.
Therefore the WTA organised clay court tournament in Stuttgart will be her first this year as she prepares for the clay court in general and the French Open specifically. The WTA Stuttgart Open is scheduled to start on the 16th of April and will run till the 24th of April.
