Last year he was 100 and now he’s just eleventh. So his jump is just huge. It is just very surprising. Corretja shares how Alcaraz won the Rio Open and then also performed to his best on clay for Spain in the Davis Cup. He then came out all guns blazing and fought his way through to the semifinals of the Indian Wells and then backed it up by winning the Miami Open. Therefore Corretja highlights the teenager’s versatility on various surfaces.

“Not only on clay but on hard courts and the consistency that he is having is impressing me so much. Because he played in Rio, he won, he came to play Davis Cup on clay and then flew over to play the semifinals in the Indian Wells and now winning Miami. This is something big and very special,” he continued.

The former World No. 2 pointed out the technicalities of the youngster. He highlights Alcaraz’s areas of strength and the areas where he needs to improve. Overall he was very impressed with the combination and feel that the combination is simply unbelievable.

“We need to be looking forward because he is going to be someone unbelievable in the present and of course in the future. I think his consistency is just amazing because he is moving extremely well. He has been very aggressive and has a huge forehand but he improved his backhand so much. He plays flat, he can change down the line. Of course, when he just running into the ball he is very explosive. He is improving his serve but this is probably the part of his game that he can improve a lot and he is brave and likes to attack. He can also defend. So he is finding the great combination to become an unbelievable great player,” Corretja elaborated.

Alcaraz is always known for his aggressive mentality and attacking gameplay but Corretja pinpoints how the 18-year-old also knows how to defend when it is needed. “He has got that feeling of he can dictate. But at the same time, he needs to defend and he needs to hang in there and hustle so many balls, he does that. This is not something that everybody has and Alcaraz for sure has both of the qualities. So this is unbelievable and his attitude is also always positive ad great with a good character. So this is something I believe is very special,” Alex Corretja concluded.
