World No. 19 Carlos Alcaraz continues his run at the 2022 Indian Wells Masters as he defeats Gael Monfils in the 4th round to enter the quarter-finals of a Masters-1000 tournament for the first time in his career. Alcaraz won the match 7-5, 6-1 in 1 hour and 17 minutes to keep his streak of winning matches in straight-sets this week in the desert.
The win made Alcaraz the youngest quarter-finalist in the tournament since Michael Chang made the last-8 in 1989 aged 17, being a year younger than the 18-year old Alcaraz who will turn 19 in a month’s time. The teenager has already captured an ATP-500 title, becoming one of the youngest to do so and a title in a Masters so early will take him a level up against many others.
The win over Monfils, who has been in great form this season and came into the match with a win over current World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev that saw Daniil lose the number 1 spot on the rankings, it was assumed that it will be a tough battle for the teenager but he defied the odds once again as he took down the French veteran.
The win left many fans shocked and surprised over the talents of the young Spaniard and Patrick McEnroe was one of the many who expressed his happiness via his Twitter handle. “I’ve said it before. And I’ll say it again. @alcarazcarlos03 is the next great player,” tweeted the American.
“Can improve and do better” says Carlos Alcaraz after the win over Gael Monfils
Joining some of the finest players in the quarter-finals, Alcaraz is still not satisfied with the level he is at. Looking to improve and get better every day, the teenager addressed the press wishing to improve further.
“It means a lot to me. It’s really special to be in the quarter-finals in a Masters 1000. I’m really proud of the level that I’m playing in this tournament. I love this tournament and being in the quarter-finals here is pretty good. The drop shot is a [weapon] that I have. It’s good to have it in the tough moments, in the close moments, to use it. It helps. I’m going to be happy if I keep the level, but I always say that you can improve every day, you can do better every day,” said Alcaraz after the match.
Next up for the teenager will be the defending champion and British No. 1 Cameron Norrie who comes in from a crunch battle with Jenson Brooksby defeating the American 6-2, 6-4 with the scoreline not justifying the battle Norrie and Brooksby had in their 4th round match.
