HISTORY: Casper Ruud becomes the first ATP player from Norway to qualify for the ATP finals

It has been a dream year for Casper Ruud on the ATP tour. The Norwegian who started as the clay-court specialist during the first half of the season has now shown his ability to succeed on the hard courts as well.
With consistent performances, across tournaments, Ruud has now qualified for the upcoming ATP Finals next month. Ruud sealed his spot at the marquee event in Turin by reaching the quarterfinals of the ongoing Paris Masters.
In making his debut at the ATP finals, the 22-year-old will also become the first Norwegian to qualify for the year-ending championships, which will be played between 14-21 November.
Along with Ruud, Novak Djokovic, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev, Matteo Berrettini and Andrey Rublev too have booked their places for ATP finals.
Speaking to the press after his qualification, Ruud said, “It’s been an unbelievable year that will have the perfect end to the season. It’s been a stressful couple of weeks and months, because it’s been such a tight [FedEx ATP] Race [To Turin]. It’s been fun at the same time. It’s been so exciting to watch as a tennis fan, and I’ve watched a lot as well.”
For the year Ruud has won five ATP titles and all of those have come on the clay courts. In the process, he also broke into the top-10 of the ATP rankings and has now attained a career-high ranking of eight.
Casper Ruud reaches quarters in Paris
After beating Marcos Giron and Alexander Bublik in the initial rounds, Ruud will now take on World No.4 Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals of the Bercy Masters.
Over the past few weeks, the Norway player has impressed with his hard court skills by achieving good results in Vienna and San Diego. Although Ruud has won multiple titles on the tour in 2021, he is yet to win the ATP 1000 Masters.
