WTA Parma 2021: Coco Gauff destroys Wang Qiang to win her maiden title on Clay
Coco Gauff
The dream Clay season for 17-year old Coco Gauff just got better after her straight sets victory over Qiang Wang of China in the final of the Emilia-Romagna Open in Parma. The young American demolished past her opponent in an hour and 14 minutes in straight sets 6-1,6-3.
This is Gauff’s second title of her career, having won at Linz in 2019, and her first on Clay. The teenager has been having a purple patch on Italian Clay this season. She reached the semi-finals at Rome last week losing to Iga Swiatek and has gone all the way this week in Parma.
She has dropped just 1 game all tournament and has been as convincing as ever. In the final, she was right off the word go and broke Wang’s serve upfront. Soon she stormed off to a 3-0 lead. Her Chinese opponent could only get one game in the first set. Gauff served for the set and won it 6-1.
Gauff closed out the second set comfortably to win second title of her career
It was a relatively tight start to the second set as both players held serve before Gauff eventually broke to take a 3-2 lead. Wang’s groundstrokes from the baseline were more accurate and down the line in the second set as compared to the first.
It was all Gauff after the break. Although Wang managed to hold her serve thereafter, Gauff had an advantage of the break and consolidated that to win the second set 6-3 and eventually the title in Parma.
Gauff has won 20 of her last 26 matches on tour going into the French Open. She has upset some big names on the big stage previously and would want to repeat the same in Paris this year too. To put her performance in the spotlight this year as compared to previous years, she had won just 21 matches in 2019 and 2020 combined. The American teenager is currently ranked 30th in the World and can break into the top 25 next week.
