It hasn’t been a great time for Daniel this year on the circuit. Although he also took part in some major tournaments as a qualifier, the Japanese has played most of his tennis at the Challenger level. Daniel beat German veteran Philipp Kohlschreiber in straight sets in the last round. Also, the 28-year-old has spent most of the time on the clay. Therefore, it will be a tough task for Daniel to make any inroads in Indian Wells this week.
On the other hand, Opelka comes into this round with decent hopes of creating a few upsets in the draw. After a stutter in the first half of the season, the lanky American managed to find his best tennis and in the process made a few deep runs in marquee tournaments.
Once the North Americans season began, the 24-year-old has been consistently beating some big names on the circuit, with his powerful game. Opelka also reached the finals of the Masters event in Toronto, before he was beaten by World No.2 Daniil Medvedev. However, Opelka did lose to Casper Ruud in the recently concluded Laver Cup event in Boston.
