World No.2 Daniil Medvedev had the perfect fortnight in New York, the one which he will remember for the rest of his life. He denied Novak Djokovic the calendar slam and won his maiden grand slam title, beating the Serb in straight sets 6-4,6-4,6-4 in the final.

Medvedev once again reassured everyone why he is one of the best players on hardcourts currently. His unorthodox gamestyle proved too much for Djokovic as he couldn’t break into his serve. Medvedev dropped just one set in the entire tournament and has become the first player in almost a decade to win a major by dropping just one set.

Medvedev has many times said that he likes to see his ‘very close’ ones seated in his box and cheer for him. One such important member of Medvedev’s box is his wife, Daria. The couple were also celebrating their third wedding anniversary on the day of the final. Before his match, the second seed expressed that he wants to make a perfect gift to his wife by winning the title. “Today is my third wedding anniversary. I would like to make a perfect gift to my wife by winning the title!” he said earlier. And he did that!

In his winner’s speech, Medvedev addressed his wife at the end and revealed his motivation behind winning the title. “I wanna finish my speech on a very sweet note. It’s a third anniversary for me and my wife today and during the tournament I couldn’t think of a present so after semis, when I went into the final, I thought if I lose I need to find a present fast but also, if I lose, I will have no time to buy a present, so I will have to win!”
