Daniil Medvedev in a tough stop because of ITF’s proposal to ban Russian Athletes
Daniil Medvedev
The 13-time ATP title winner Daniil Medvedev reached the top of the Pyramid, grabbing the 1st rank from Novak Djokovic, who had been the World No. 1 for over a year. However, he couldn’t stay too happy about it because of the Russia-Ukraine war. Since the start of the controversy last month, the Russian had been continuously opposing the war and was promoting peace.
He first said, “By being a tennis player, I want to promote peace all over the world. I’ve been in so many different countries as a junior and as a pro. It’s just not easy to hear all this news. I’m all for peace.”
His view is that this crisis would heavily impact the children of this generation, getting him to make this comment. “Today, I want to speak on behalf of every kid in the world.” He continued, “They all have dreams, their lives are just starting, so many nice experiences to come…
“That’s why I want to ask for peace in the world, for peace between countries. Kids are born with inner trust in the world, they believe so much in everything, in people, in love, in safety, injustice, in their chances in life.” He further said, “Let’s be together and show them that’s it true because every kid shouldn’t stop dreaming.”
Impact of ITF’s decision on Daniil Medvedev’s ranking
The ITF, International Tennis Federation gave a clear-cut letter, giving their reason for making a harsh decision. Their letter mentioned, “Russia and Belarus do not have the right not only to hold international competitions on their territory but also to participate in all ITF team and individual tournaments abroad.”
It also said, “Civilians are dying, including women and children; civilian infrastructure is collapsing … This is a full-scale war that will push our country back decades.” Siding with Ukraine was a ‘Swift Action’ made by ITF. “We stand united with Ukraine and are working with the Ukraine Tennis Federation. Right now, our priority is the safety of the tennis players and the security of all those participating in our events.”
However, this decision made by ITF not only affects Daniil Medvedev but also fellow Russian players. World No. 6, Andrey Rublev openly showed his protest towards peace by writing the words ‘No war’ on a camera after his match in the Dubai Tennis Championship.
