Daniil Medvedev March Misery: ‘It’s difficult to beat me when I play my best tennis but it’s even more challenging to produce it always’

Daniil Medvedev

Daniil Medvedev is the current world no.2 and it was shocking for fans to see him lose in the quarter-finals when he was one of the strong favorites considered for winning the title. He lost the match against Hubert Hurkacz in straight sets and the final score was 7-6(7), 6-3.

Enthusiastic sports spectators concluded that the tennis star was still in shock after his loss against Rafael Nadal in the Australian Open finals and Mexican Open semifinals, and the Russian player finally broke the silence around this issue and said, “I think the first tournament in Acapulco was not easy in terms of feelings, like everything that happened in Australia, which I think affected Indian Wells, as if I didn’t feel in the right direction in my tennis. And at the same time, I tried to find a solution. Here, as I said, I feel like I found the right direction to win tournaments. March was not an easy month for anyone. I just tried to play as much as possible, to train well too, because that’s my job. I tried to play good tennis.”

It is understandable that the player has still not been able to comprehend the fact that he lost to the player twice and the latter match could have resulted in him earning a Grand Slam. This could possibly have affected his play even in the Miami Open as he clearly states that it affected his Indian Wells performance.

Medvedev was not happy with his Indian Wells Performance

Clearly, his performance in the Australian Open and Mexican Open affected his performance as he lost the former tournament finals and the latter he lost the semi-finals both to Rafael Nadal. He talks about the pressure he feels after becoming world no.1 and participating in the Indian Wells tournament. His performance in the Indian Wells has not been the best so far with his best being in the last 16. Indian Wells 2022 was not such a happy event in March as the Russian got knocked out in the round of 32 while playing against French player Gael Monfils and thereby losing his position of World no.1.

When talking about the Mexican Open that happened prior to the Indian Wells, he said, ” Playing at Acapulco… consciously, the Australian Open was by far over,” he reflected. “But I think unconsciously it still was somewhere there, especially playing against Rafa. Something was not right in my energy in that match.

Maybe it’s [because of] this, maybe not”. when he was asked about his Mexican Open performance when he lost while playing against Rafa in the semi-finals.

However, Daniil Medvedev has finally revealed that he is happy with his Miami Open performance even if he lost in the quarterfinals because he feels that it was more important for him to win the match itself than getting the title of world no.1. Although he is happy that he is heading in the right direction, he also feels disappointed that he couldn’t play his best tennis due to feeling under the weather.

He says, “All the match I was not feeling my best. But, you know, sometimes it happens,” he told the press. “I don’t know the actual reason. Maybe the heat. But I was feeling super, like, dizzy, tired, and there was this long game where I couldn’t serve anymore. Then in the locker room, I was cramping quite much, so physically was not easy. But at the same time, that’s part of the game.”

Although Medvedev was very close to cinching the spot of world no.1, the 26- year old will have every opportunity to claim the position of world no. 1 as there are still a lot ATP tournaments around.
