‘No matter the score, I’m just going to turn up the heat against Novak Djokovic in the finals,’ assures Daniil Medvedev
Daniil Medvedev
World No.2 Daniil Medvedev will probably be playing the biggest match of his career, when he takes on World No.2 Novak Djokovic in the finals of the 2021 US Open.
Although the Russian has been a part of marquee events and matches in the past, he will know what’s at stake when the two best players lock horns on Sunday.
While the Serbian star is on the threshold of becoming only the second man in the Open Era to win the Calendar Slam, the Russian is in pursuit of his maiden Major title.
But perhaps, if Medvedev is able to stop the Djokovic juggernaut from rolling in the finals, his name will forever be printed in annals of tennis history. Speaking on the massive occasion and his approach, the second seed promised to give his all in the finals.
“I’ll probably be in the history books if I don’t let him do this. I will give it my all. I feel like I didn’t leave my heart on the court in Melbourne. Even if of course I wanted to, there was something not turning up this match. That’s what I’m going to try to do on Arthur Ashe with hopefully 100% of fans.”
The 2019 US Open runner-up further stated that although he lost his way in the Australian Open finals in Melbourne, he will not let his guard down, despite the score line on Sunday.
“No matter the score, I’m just going to turn up the heat, if I can say, and try to do my best, even more than what I did in Melbourne.”
Third time lucky for Medvedev?
The 26-year-old Medvedev has been in two Grand Slam finals already, but has failed to cross the line. Therefore, he remains determined to break the shackles, despite know that Djokovic is on the cusp on creating history.
“Of course, again, if I play Novak, he has 20 Slams, going for the Calendar Slam, it’s not a must, but I want to do it even more. That’s normal. The more you lose something, the more you want to win it, the more you want to gain it and take it. I lost two finals. I want to win the third one.”
