World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev recently questioned the format of the Davis Cup after the Russian Tennis Federation’s 2-0 win over Sweden in the quarter-finals of the ongoing 2021 Davis Cup Finals to book the final spot in the semi-finals of the ‘World Cup of Tennis’.

Medvedev is yet to drop a set in the Finals and it was his straight-set win over Sweden’s Mikael Ymer that sealed the Russian’s place in the semi-finals. Daniil is however not a fan of the current format and is the latest player on the Tour to criticise the new format that has been in place since 2019 after Spanish and Barcelona football player Gerard Pique‘s company took over the tournament.

Medvedev spoke about his viewpoint in the post-match press conference addressing the fact but then subtly retracted his remarks as well. “To answer your question, it’s definitely a disadvantage for the best singles players to play in three games. At the same time, how many ties did we see in five games where there was a lot of upheavals, especially when there were five sets.

“At the end of the day, I feel like it’s always the same percentage chance of winning when a team has the best players,” said Medvedev.

Medvedev along with his compatriots started the year with a win at the 2021 ATP Cup and things have been going pretty well for them. While Medvedev went on to play in 2 Grand Slam finals including his title run at the 2021 US Open, the others also did pretty well.

At the Tokyo Olympics, it was an all-Russian final in the Mixed Doubles while Karen Khachanov won the Men’s silver medal. The same team has proceeded for the Davis Cup Finals and if they are able to go past the Germans, they will be up against former champions Croatia who move into the finals after defeating Serbia.
