25-year old Daniil Medvedev, who won his first Grand Slam title at the 2021 US Open in September, spoke about his new-found popularity. Conducting an Instagram live session from his official account, Medvedev interacted with his followers.

In the live session, Medvedev said “When you win a Grand Slam tournament it is clear that your notoriety increases but that you know when you start playing tennis. After that, so far it’s going well, I don’t live in Los Angeles, and I haven’t seen paparazzi in front of my house. I am still fortunate enough to be able to enjoy my personal life with my loved ones in peace. It is also the advantage of living in Monte-Carlo.”

“Afterwards, I must also admit that I am living in new situations where a lot of fans come to me, and there I say to myself: ‘ah, ok he probably wants a photo etc. The key is to find the right balance between the life of a champion and that of everyday life”, he added modestly.

Medvedev’s year at a glance:

The tall baseliner has had an exceptional year on tour. He entered 2021 fresh from his victory at the 2020 ATP World Tour Finals. In the first week of February, he led Russia to a 4-0 victory in the second edition of the ATP Cup. In the subsequent weeks, he reached the finals of the Australian Open, eventually losing to 8-time champion Novak Djokovic.

His first title of the season came at the Open 13 in Marseille, where he bested Pierre Hugues Herbert in three sets. Following this win, Medvedev achieved a career-high ranking of World No. 2, which he has retained so far; the first man out of the Big 4, since Lleyton Hewitt in July 2005.

Coronavirus led to retirement from the Monte-Carlo Masters. In the French Open 2021, he reached the quarterfinals, losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas. His first grass-court title came at the Mallorca Championships. At the 2021 Wimbledon, he was seeded second. He lost to Hubert Hurcakz in the pre-quarters.

His next victory came at the Canada Open, where he defeated Reilly Opelka in straight sets to lift the trophy. He also managed to reach the semifinals at the Cincinnati Masters.

Daniil Medvedev won the first grand slam of his career at the Flushing Meadows in New York City, in September.

In what could be called the ‘upset of the year’, Medvedev defeated 20-time grand slam champion Novak Djokovic in straight sets. The stunning 6-4 6-4 6-4 defeat shattered Djokovic’s dream of becoming only the second man in the Open Era to win a calendar grand slam.
