“Daniil Medvedev will always have an explosive temperament” Justine Henin advises the World No. 1 to manage his emotions better

World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev became the first top-ranked player on the ATP Tour in 18 years breaking the dominance of the Big-4 who shuffled the places at the top but did not allow anybody else at the top. Having chased Novak Djokovic for a year from the 2nd spot, Medvedev had his moment finally this year when he dethroned the Serbian.
As he now looks to cement his place at the top, the 2021 US Open champion will need some big titles to gain more ranking points and hold onto his ranking which can be overtaken by Novak as the two are separated by a mere 150 points. Medvedev now however has the opportunity to move ahead by having the shot at two Masters events in the month of March played on hardcourts, his best surface.
As Medvedev looks to begin his campaign at the 2022 Indian Wells Masters, he received a piece of advice from 7-time Grand Slam champion and former World No. 1 Justine Henin who continues to remain the only woman in 25 years (Steffi Graf in 1995 and 1996 was the last) to defend her French Open titles winning a hattrick of titles at the Roland Garros from 2005 to 2007.
“Daniil Medvedev already showed that he can handle a lot of pressure. I think he will have to continue working on managing his emotions because I think he leaves a lot of energy in these moments. He will always have an explosive temperament but if he wants to leave his mark on the circuit he will need to manage his emotions better,” said Henin speaking with Eurosport.
Daniil Medvedev’s rage against the officials at the 2022 Australian Open

Medvedev’s temper was on display at the 2022 Australian Open on many occasions. Already receiving flak from the crowd for no particular reason, Medvedev managed to pull out himself from difficult situations. However, he lost his cool during the semi-final against arch-nemesis Stefanos Tsitsipas. Medvedev had accused of Stefanos receiving on-court coaching from his father and coach Apostolos which was later caught on camera as well.
Unhappy with the chair umpire not giving any penalty to the Greek, Medvedev lost his cool and eventually lost his grip over the set as well. During the changeover, he went on a massive rant calling the chair umpire ‘Stupid and a Small Cat‘ for which he later faced a fine as well of $12,000. His emotions were high during the finals against Rafael Nadal as well with the player complaining about the crowd disturbing him between the service and then applauding the crowd sarcastically.
