‘SHOCKING’ Denis Shapovalov to be Fined for Misconduct in Australian Open 2022

Canadian tennis star Denis Shapovalov started his Australian Open 2022 journey on a good note and reached the quarterfinals. He defeated Alexander Zverev in the fourth round with a score of 6-3, 7-6, 6-3. But his run ended when he played against former World No.1 Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinals.

Ahead of the Aussie Open, the player participated in the ATP Cup and conquered the tournament by defeating Pablo Carreno Busta in the finals with a score of 6-4, 6-3. He has an ATP ranking of World No.14 and his highest ranking was World No.10. He has one career singles title to his name.

Denis played against Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open 2022 where he lost to the latter with a score of 6-3, 6-4, 4-6, 3-6, 6-3. But amidst the match, Denis created a nuisance and condemned the chair umpire and Rafa. He yelled at the umpire for being corrupt and that Rafa has been off-court for a long time and he still needs time. The player also smashed his racquet on the court.

“He’s been off the court for so long still he is not ready to play. You gotta call him. He’s not ready to play, what do you mean I am not ready to play. Are you kidding me? You guys are all corrupt, you guys are all corrupt,” The player said.

According to the tweet that New York Times tennis correspondent Christopher Clarey posted, Denis will be penalized for his misbehavior. He has been fined $8000 for unsportsmanlike conduct when he said “You guys are all corrupt” to the chair umpire Carlos Bernardes and $4000 for racquet abuse. This is the biggest fine of Australian Open till date.
