World No.14 Diego Schwartzman is not only one of the most likeable players on the ATP tour, but he is also one of the most hard working tennis players on the circuit. The diminutive Argentine is a veteran these days, having played consistent tennis for a number of years.

The 29-year-old who is yet to win a major title in his career is making his fourth appearance at the ongoing National Bank Open, in Toronto, Canada. Schwartzman is the eighth seed at the ATP 1000 Masters event and will take on Frenchman Benoit Paire in the round of 32.

While Schwartzman has been a part of plenty of ATP 1000 Masters, he reflected on his debut appearance at the Masters level in 2015. “In Indian Wells [in 2015], I knew before the match that Roger Federer was [waiting] in the second round. It was a special match against [Jerzy] Janowicz. He was doing very well at that time… It was a very tough match, but I won 7-6 in the third set and I was really nervous at the end. I won the last point and I was jumping and doing something with my legs. I don’t remember exactly what, but it was really fun,” the former World No.9 recalled.

The Argentina player further added that his dream match and tournament would be to play the Swiss maestro and beat him in the finals of Indian Wells. Schwartzman has played Federer on four occasions on the ATP tour. Unfortunately, the 20-time Grand Slam champion holds a clean 4-0 lead. Their last meeting took place at the Shanghai Masters in 2017, where Federer beat Schwartzman in straight sets.

On the hard courts, the 29-year-old has a seven/five win/loss record this season.
