Grigor Dimitrov enters this second-round match as the higher-ranked player, while Karen Khachanov may not be the benchmark when it comes to making ranking comparisons. The Bulgarian has redeemed himself from his disastrous 2019 season in which he dropped as low as No.78 in world ranking and has since managed to haul himself to a top 20 ranking. Dimitrov began his 2021 Paris Masters campaign with a three-set win over Richard Gasquet.
The 16th seeded Bulgarian, even made the semifinals at Indian Wells recently, beating the likes of Daniil Medvedev, Reilly Opelka and Hubert Hurkacz before losing to eventual champion Cameron Norrie.
Meanwhile, winning an Olympic silver and making it to the Wimbledon quarter-finals, Karen Khachanov has managed to put some serious threat to his name over the second half of the ATP tour. The 25 year-old was incredibly close to losing the second set against Michael Ymer in the opener but eventually pulled it off to set up an encounter with Dimitrov in the second round.

Dimitrov showed flashes of his best tennis in Indian Wells, going past the best of opponents, including Daniil Medvedev, Reilly Opelka and Hubert Hurkacz before losing to eventual champion Cameron Norrie. If he can find that sort of level again, he will certainly be able to take down Khachanov. Moreover, The Bulgarian was then beaten by Stefanos Tsitsipas in his Vienna opener and will thus be looking to bounce back and make a deep run in the final Masters 1000 event of the season.
The 25 year-old Russian has proved himself ealier on this surface in 2018 and he would be aiming to repeat the exploits of the same which also happens to be his first and only Masters title in Bercy.
The Bulgarian is marginally the favorite to maintain that 100% winning record against Khachanov. But for both players, it should be noted, have a penchant for fast surfaces. The Paris courts do have a high bounce, which makes it slightly favorable to play into Khachanov’s racket. The Russian will have the time to unleash and hit right through Dimitrov’s brittle defenses. The Bulgarian is at his best when plays on the offence however, he might not have that luxury against Khachanov’s raw power.
