With Ukraine undergoing a war with its neighboring country Russia, former Ukrainian tennis star, Sergiy Stakhovsky has taken on a courageous stand to protect his homeland. Stakhovsky has enlisted himself in the military reserves to help his country fight on the front lines.

This valiant step has been met with many plaudits from not only the tennis world but all over the globe. In a recent interview, Stakhovsky revealed Novak Djokovic also sent a message of support to the Ukrainian for his bold stand. However, he revealed that he tried to contact Nadal and Federer, but the duo haven’t responded to Stakhvovsky yet. But, the Ukrainian also added the players’ decision to remain silent is their own choice as it is not their war in the first place.

“Djokovic sent me a message of support, we even had a little chat. I tried to contact Federer and Nadal, I’m sorry they preferred to remain silent. But I understand them, it’s not their war. We have the support of great personalities, I hope it will last,” Stakhovsky said.

During the Mexican Open, Nadal spoke about the war in Ukraine and expressed his disbelief over such vile attacks taking place even in these times.

“I find it incredible that at this time of the 21st century, there is a war going on. I can’t understand it. Hopefully, it ends as soon as possible,” Nadal said in the press conference.

With their homeland under threat from Russia, Ukrainian tennis players have taken on a united stand to condemn the invasion by Russia. Elina Svitolina has spoken out against the attacks and threatened to boycott matches against Russian players until the WTA took action to suspend the Russian Federation and not allow Russian athletes to compete under their own flag.

Dayana Yastremska, who was in midst of the war just a few days and had to flee from her country, put on a brave front and competed at the Monterrey Open. The 21-year-old broke down in tears after an emotional opening-round win.

Despite being under emotional turmoil because of the harrowing situations in their homeland, the players have vowed to compete at tournaments and contribute to their country in their own way. Svitolina pledged to donate all her prize money earned to military aid and relief operation.
