Dominic Thiem hasn’t played on the ATP Tour since he injured his wrist in a match against Adrian Mannarino in the warm-up games at Wimbledon in Mallorca last summer, and he was hoping on making a comeback in Abu Dhabi this week. But he has officially pulled out of the tournament, claiming that he misses some confidence in his forehand.
Thiem is the second person after Emma Raducanu who has pulled out of the tournament. However, the reason for Raducanu’s absence is because she contacted Covid after reaching Abu Dhabi.
“This is not a setback” claims Dominic Thiem
Thiem provided his fans with an encouraging update in October, confirming that he would not require a wrist surgery and talked about his chances of playing in 2021. His fans were excited to see him in the lineup for the Mubadala World Tennis Championship 2021. However, his withdrawal days before the commencement of the championship was a big shocker.
“I was looking forward to making my return to competition at Abu Dhabi but I feel that I am not yet ready to compete at the highest level, It’s disappointing to not take part this year but I need to continue my preparation for the upcoming season,” Thiem wrote on his social media account.
Thiem also said in an interview that the withdrawal from Abu Dhabi is not a setback as it was clear from the beginning that it’ll be close. He is pain-free but still misses some confidence on the forehand. He plans to play the ATP Cup and the Australian Open, maybe 250 event in Sydney.
