“Don’t have any response to Wimbledon”- Daniil Medvedev unfazed over a potential ban on Russian athletes

Daniil Medvedev was among the Russian athletes that had to face the brunt of the consequences after their country launched a full-fledged invasion of Ukraine. This vile move was met with stringent sanctions on Russian athletes. While other sports, including football and figure-skating, banned Russian athletes from competing in international competitions, the tennis governing bodies stopped short of a blanket ban and suspended the federations of both Russia and Belarus, only allowing their athletes to compete under a neutral flag.

But calls have been growing for a complete ban on the Russian players. Recently, British Sports Minister, Nigel Huddleston, claimed Russian players should be barred from competing at Wimbledon unless they publicly condemn Russian President Vladimir Putin’s move to invade Ukraine. However, Medvedev is not bothered over the fuss about a potential ban. During the pre-match presser at the Miami Open, the Russian weighed in his thoughts over the possibility of not being allowed to compete at Wimbledon.

“Look, I try to take it tournament by tournament. I mean, there are always, you know, different rules, regulations in order to play or not to play. You know, right now I’m here in Miami. I can play and I’m happy to play tennis. That’s, you know, the sport I love. I want to promote the sport all over the world. We’ll have tough moments and good moments,” said Medvedev.

But Medvedev refused to further elucidate over the matter saying he is currently focused on his campaign in Miami and then the next one at the Monte-Carlo Masters and as of now he is not bothered about Wimbledon.

“That’s, to be honest, all I have to say, you know. That’s going to be the same with every tournament. So the next one after this one is Monte-Carlo, you know, where this moment I’m a resident there, so I love this tournament also. I can play it normally and I’m happy to play it. Don’t have any response to Wimbledon,” he added.

As for the on-court part, Medvedev will begin his campaign at the 2022 Miami Open against Andy Murray in the second round. After losing his World No.1 ranking to Novak Djokovic following an early exit at the Indian Wells, the Russian has a chance to reclaim it soon and need to reach the semi-finals in Miami to reclaim the top spot.
