Emma Raducanu’s game style reminds Mats Wilander of Novak Djokovic
Novak Djokovic and Emma Raducanu
The 2021 US Open has been the tournament of the teenagers. The young brigade from different countries have raised many eyebrows with their talent and tenacity in New York this year.
Emma Radcanu has been one such teenager who has stood out at the US Open. The British girl has been clinical in her tennis, owing to which she finds herself in the semifinals of the US Open.
Interestingly, yesterday was not only Raducanu’s maiden semifinal, but she also happens to be only the third woman ever ranked outside the top 100 to reach the final four of the US Open.
Speaking to the media after her stunning victory over Swiss Belinda Bencic, the 18-year-old said, “I have an absolutely amazing team and I have a team back home who could not be here – I am sure they are watching, I hope! Thank you so much everyone, I wish you could be here with me but everything we have been working for has shown here.”
Already the British teenager has caught the attention of many experts. Many former players have already billed her as a superstar going forward. Meanwhile, former World No.1 and seven-time Grand Slam champion Mats Wilander opened up on how he sees similarities in the game play between Raducanu and the World No.1 Novak Djokovic.
“We have to start talking about her service because serving like she does at 18 is very unusual. She has great intelligence as to how to serve, and the power and spin she puts on the ball is not normal. In addition, its mobility is incredible, especially on the backhand. She always hits with the ideal spot of the racket and she is very flexible and agile in her movements. It reminds me a lot of Djokovic,” the 57-year-old told metro.co.uk.
Raducanu to crack into Top-50
Raducanu will now take on Canadian teenager Leylah Fernandez in the US Open finals. She is also expected to break into the top-50 in the WTA rankings for the first time in her young career.
Raducanu is also expected to earn a minimum prize money of $1,250,000 for making the final four. It is also to be noted that the youngster has not dropped set in the run to the semifinals of the US Open.
