18-year old Emma Raducanu scripted one of the greatest underdog stories at the US Open 2021 when the teenager who started the tournament from the qualifying rounds as World No. 150, went on to lift the title without dropping a single set, seeing her rank jump 127 places as she found herself on the 23rd spot in the latest WTA rankings.

The teenager herself did not expect a run so glorious as she had as she was set to begin from the qualifying rounds and then enter the main-draw had she made it through the qualifying. She was accompanied by her coaching team and did not have her parents around as the Covid restrictions could not get entry into the US for Ian and Renee Raducanu.

As Emma prepared to play in the biggest match of her short career so far, her mother Renne was collecting Emma’s Kent Player of the Year at the Sundridge Park Tennis Club in Bromley, South-East London, one of the grassroots places for Emma from where she began her journey to become a Pro.

Emma first played tennis aged five and a year later was listed on Bromley Tennis Centre’s roll of honour, having won the Under-8s Girls’ Championships. In act of showing their gratitude and loyalty to the club, Renee travelled to the ceremony on one of the most important days of her daughter’s life.

Emma has been one of the most followed players in Britain ever since her heroics at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships where she made it to the main-draw on a wildcard being ranked outside the Top-300 rank on the WTA Tour. In one of her interviews with Vogue Magazine, Emma described how her parents have instilled positive habits in her that she is now able to display on the court.

I think the confidence comes from just inner belief. My mum comes from a Chinese background, they have very good self-belief. It’s not necessarily about telling everyone how good you are, but it’s about believing it within yourself. I really respect that about the culture.

My mum’s side of the family are so mentally resilient. It’s like nothing can bring them down. I would say I take a big part of my inspiration from her. My mum has worked very hard,” said Emma about how her mother’s Chinese culture has helped her during tough moments on the court and how she continues having self-belief.

Her father Ian has been rather soft-spoken and a quite observant person of Emma’s practices and her matches and as Emma said after winning the US Open title, “He is very hard to please person, but I managed to do it today.”
