French Open 2021: Federer or Nadal Who will win 21st Grand Slam at Roland Garros?

French Open 2021

Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer are arguably two of the greatest players of our generation. The duo have shared the stage on several occasions, and have entertained their fans with top quality tennis over the past two decades. Both, Nadal and Federer share the record for most Grandslam titles won, after the former secured 20th major title at the French Open 2020.

With French Open 2021 commencing from May 30, 2021, many tennis fans expect Rafael Nadal to claim his 21st Grandslam title. However, this time, Roger Federer is playing his first Grandslam tournament in just under two years, which brings him in contention to lift his 21st major. Rafael Nadal is chasing his 14th French Open title in Paris, and he enters the tournament as a heavy favorite.

Rafael Nadal is riding high on confidence, as he claimed the Italian Open 2021 title a few weeks ago. On the other hand, Roger Federer has just played one clay court tournament so far, that resulted in a second round loss at the Geneva Open 2021. One can safely say that Roger Federer is not in his best shape prior to Roland Garros, and is competing to regain his match fitness.

For the first time in tennis history, each of the Big Three of tennis- Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic are in the same half of the draw. This means that only one of the three players can seal a finals berth this time around. However, Rafael Nadal is surely the favorite to claim his fifth consecutive title in Paris this year.

Roger Federer is yet to win a clay court match this season, and has been handed a tough draw. The Swiss opens his account against the Uzbek, Denis Istomin. Things get tougher from the fourth round, as he is expected to face the Italian, Matteo Berrettini. He claimed the Serbia Open 2021 title a few weeks ago and is in red-hot form. In the quarterfinals, Federer can face Novak Djokovic, and if he does get through, he will face Rafael Nadal in the semifinals.

To put that into perspective, even if Roger Federer manages to reach the semifinals, he will be up against Rafael Nadal. The Swiss has never defeated Rafael Nadal at the French Open, and has always been dominated mercilessly by the 34-year old. It is highly unlikely to change this year, given Nadal’s current form.

Rafael Nadal will claim his 21st Grandslam title at the French Open this year. The only player that can stop the Spaniard from doing so is world number one, Novak Djokovic. However, the Serbian was battered by Nadal in the finals of French Open last year in straight sets.
