Roger Federer is a name synonymous with success. Over the years we have seen this man from Switzerland do the impossible on the tennis court. He was the trailblazer, the man to break records, he set a benchmark for Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic and forced them to become better. What he did was raise the standards of the game of tennis itself!
Life moves in cycle, and unfortunately Federer is on his way down. In the last year and a half the once mighty king of the tennis court has had to come to terms with reality. His body is not the same anymore, as his double knee surgery will tell you. His aura is not the same anymore as losses to Nikoloz Basilashvili(in Doha) and Pablo Andújar(in Geneva) have proved. But the spirit of the champion remains.
In his first round encounter against Denis Istomin, it was vintage Federer at the Philippe-Chatrier. His movement was fluid, his drop shots were marvelous, his serve worked like a dream. A straight sets win 6-2 6-4 6-3. The performance matched up to the name. The King was happy with the performance too as one could tell after the match. Beware of a happy and confident Federer ! His second round opponent is an old adversary, Marin Cilic. Cilic has forever played in the shadow of the Big 4 of tennis, and has lived through the times when Federer was at his best.
The last few seasons have seen, this one time World No.3 and US Open champion, drop out of the top 40 in the rankings. His form has been nothing great too. But this thirty two year old has at least two three years of good tennis left in him and he must believe that. In the first round Cilic beat Arthur Rinderknech in straight sets, 7-6 6-1 6-2.

Federer and Cilic have been around for a very long time, and they have met ten times on tour thus far. In the head to head, Federer dominates Cilic with a 9-1 record. The only time they met on clay was in 2011 at the Monte Carlo Masters, an encounter that Federer won in straight sets 6-3 6-4.

Federer at his best is unplayable. He showed in the first round encounter that he can still play at that level, but can he recover from the fatigue and produce the same level of play in a day’s time? Will his knees hold? Does he still have the ability to maintain his levels as the tournament progresses? Too many questions there.
For Cilic, well he has not been great on clay even on his best days. He will have to hope that the Federer of the first match doesn’t turn up to play him.
Prediction: Roger Federer will beat Marin Cilic in four sets.
