Fabio Fognini vs Roberto Baena: Preview
The Italian has not enjoyed a great time on the tour in 2021 after regular premature exits in big tournaments. Fognini also succumbed to the Covid-19 virus in 2020 and is yet to gather any momentum on the tour. Unlike the previous seasons, Fognini had a rough time on his preferred red clay until the French Open. Later, the 34-year-old also got ousted in the third round of recently concluded Wimbledon by Andrey Rublev. Fognini has got a bye for this tournament, by the virtue of being the third seed. Given his recent stutter, it will be interesting to see how he shapes up this week in Bastad.
Meanwhile, the Spaniard too has been toiling hard on the circuit, this year on the clay. Multiple early round exits has not helped Baena either in 2021. Losing 20 matches for the year is a testimony to his struggle on the tour. However, his quarterfinal performance in Belgrade on clay ahead of the French Open could give him some confidence as he gets ready to take on the Italian. In the first round, the 28-year-old beat Facundo Bagnis in the opening round in straight sets.
Fabio Fognini vs Roberto Baena: Head to Head
These two have never met on the ATP tour.
Fabio Fognini vs Roberto Baena: Prediction
Both players will be meeting for the first time on the tour. Moreover, Fognini and Baena have not been at their best this season. That said, the Italian has won big titles on the clay in the past and perhaps that will give him the impetus and confidence required to get over the line in this contest.
Match Prediction: Fabio Fognini should win in two sets.
