Emma Raducanu played the first match of her 2022 season, as she was thrashed by Ukrainian, Elena Rybakina in the first round encounter. The Briton lost 6-0, 6-1 and hardly put up a fight which has raised eyebrows in regards to her Australian Open preparation.
Emma Raducanu rose to the limelight in 2021, where she became the first qualifier to ever capture the US Open 2021 singles title. However, since her triumph in New York, her form has dipped and the youngster has not been able to hit those levels again.
Former tennis player and analyst, Alex Corretja urges fans to exercise patience. He advises Emma Raducanu to soak up the pressure, as there will be a lot of expectations on her shoulders. Moreover, she will need to adapt her game slowly according to the situation.
“She needs to adjust and adapt to a different life, she’s not a little girl from before – she’s a star. And if you are a star it’s a different situation, you need to deal with absolutely, totally different moments and everybody expects a lot from you,” said Corretja.
“I think she needs to go slowly, it’s difficult to ask her for more, I don’t think she needs to go out there feeling like she needs to win another Grand Slam soon because she’s good enough to continue with her way and she will find it,” he added.
Alex Corretja backs Emma Raducanu to have a good season in 2022
Alex Corretja opined that Emma Raducanu will certainly win more Grand slam titles. However, that could take a bit of time, as she tries to understand the game and her opponents better.
The Spaniard believes that Raducanu needs to have a hidden feature in her play, as her opponents are aware of her strengths and weaknesses. Nevertheless, he expects a good season from the youngster.
“For sure she will win more Grand Slams and she’s ready to do it but I’m not so sure whether it’s going to be now or maybe she needs a little bit of time to understand how everything works now the players know her a little bit better,” the Spaniard added.
“They know her weaknesses, they know her strengths. But I’m expecting a nice season from her because she’s brave, she’s determined, and I think she’s such a great player,” Corretja continued.
Emma Raducanu has been drawn in the first round against former US Open champion, Sloane Stephens. It is indeed a difficult opening round fixture for the US Open 2021 champion, but Grandslam draws are unpredictable, and one must produce their best game when it matters the most.
