Day 2 of French Open 2021 was a pretty straightforward one, as all top seeds safely progressed into the second round on Monday. Roger Federer and Daniil Medvedev secured straight sets victories, whereas, Jannik Sinner had to grind out a five set victory. Lorenzo Sonego suffered a shocking first round defeat, which was one of the upsets of the day.

Roger Federer wins first Grandslam match in over 15 months

Roger Federer claimed his first Grandslam victory in over 15 months, as he defeated the Uzbek, Denis Istomin in straight sets. The Swiss maestro won 6-2, 6-4, 6-3 to return to winning ways. The 39-year old came into the French Open 2021 on the back of a second round defeat at Geneva Open 2021.

Roger Federer served 8 aces during the whole match, and had a first serve accuracy of about 80%. He converted 5 out of his 13 break point opportunities, and won about 79% on his second serve. Overall, it was a dominating performance from the Swiss legend.

Daniil Medvedev secures first victory at French Open

Daniil Medvedev secured his first victory at French Open after defeating Alexander Bublik in straight sets in the first round. The Russian won 6-3, 6-3, 7-5. The second seed served seven aces during the whole match, and won about 77% of his points on first serve.

Medvedev converted seven out of his 15 break point opportunities. Medvedev had lost four consecutive French Open matches prior to his win on Monday. This will give him huge confidence for the rest of the tournament.

Jannik Sinner survives a five-set scare

Jannik Sinner had to dig deep to grind out a five-set victory over Pierre Hugues Herbert in the first round. The Italian won in five sets by a score-line of 6-1, 4-6, 6-7, 7-5, 6-4. Sinner served 13 aces during the whole match, and had four double faults to his name. The Italian did not serve well during the match, as he had a second serve accuracy of just 65%. He converted eight out of his ten break point opportunities, and won 163 points compared to Herbert’s 142 points.

Lorenzo Sonego was defeated in straight sets in the first round of French Open 2021. The Italian lost by a score line of 7-5, 6-4, 6-4 to the South African, Lloyd Harris. Harris converted four out of his 12 break opportunities, whereas, Sonego could manage to convert just one break point. This will be a huge setback for Sonego, who managed to reach the quarterfinals of Italian Open 2021 a few weeks earlier.
