French Open 2021: Day 2: Swiatek, Kenin, Williams cruise into the second round, Andreescu and Muguruza bows out

The second day of the French Open 2021 was full of action with Big names prevailing into the second round while grand slam champions falling short too. Defending Champion Iga Swiatek and Former Champion secured straight sets victories while grand slam champions, Bianca Andreescu and Garbine Muguruza bowed out of the competition.
Swiatek starts off her title defence in style

Defending Champion and Birthday girl, Iga Swiatek started her title defense in style beating best-friend Kaja Juvan in the first round of the 2021 French Open. She defeated the Slovenian in straight sets 6-0,7-5 in over an hour.
After that, she asked Swiatek about how she felt coming in as the defending champion at Roland Garros. Swiatek said: “One one hand it was pretty normal because you are playing just another match in another tournament, the courts, the opponents everything is similar but you never know what’s going to happen.”
Kenin peaks at the right time

Former Australian Open champion and fourth seed Sofia Kenin has broken a four-match losing streak on clay and won her opening match at the French Open by beating 2017 champion Jelena Ostapenko in three sets 6-4,4-6,6-3.
After the match she said: “I am a feisty kid and I have to fight so yes, I have got a little bit of feistiness in me so that helps me win these type of matches.”
Andreescu stunned by Zidansek

Sixth seed Bianca Andreescu became the highest women’s seed to fall at the 2021 French Open so far as she lost a three hour marathon match against Timara Zidansek in the first round on Monday. The former US Open champion went down 6-7(1) 7-6(2) 9-7 to the Slovenian.
Former champion Muguruza bows out

Multiple grand slam champion, Garbine Muguruza who beat Serena Williams to win the title in 2016, was outplayed 6-1 6-4 by 18-year old Marta Kostyuk on Monday. The 12th seed hit 40 unforced errors as she suffered her earliest ever defeat at Roland Garros.
Williams thrashes Begu in the first official night game

23-time grand slam champion Serena Williams saved two set points in a first-set tie-break before winning 7-6(6),6-2 in the first ever night game at the French Open. The seventh seed will take on Begu’s compatriot Mihaela Buzarnescu in the second round.
