Roberto Bautista Agut begins his French Open 2021 campaign against fellow Spaniard Martinez as he continues to look for his first qualification beyond the Round of 16 at the Roland Garros. Ever since making his debut at the competition in 2010, Agut has reached the 4th round twice but couldn’t go further. He has reached the 3rd round for 3 consecutive seasons from 2018-2020.
The 11th seed has played only 4 tournaments on Clay this season, the 3 Masters and also at the Barcelona Open 2021 and failed to go past the Round of 16 stage this season. He last played at the Rome Masters 2021.
Mario Vilella Martinez will make his main draw debut at the French Open 2021 after having tried his luck at the 2020 French Open but lost in the qualifying rounds. This will be just the 2nd appearance at the Grand Slam for the 25-year old who reaches the main draw from winning his qualifying rounds in 3-sets except for the 2nd round where he won in straight-sets.
Martinez hasn’t played much of the Clay tournaments since April participating in 2 Challengers and the Marbella Open 2021 where he made it till the Round of 16 and travels to Paris from the Prague Challenger in the first week of May.
