“Friends would make traveling less lonely” Stefanos Tsitsipas finds a friend on tour, wins ATP Acapulco 2022
Stefanos Tsitsipas and Feliciano Lopez
Stefanos Tsitsipas is a Greek professional tennis player and is one of the most intriguing young players on the ATP Tour for a variety of reasons, including his sincerity in all he does, his desire to live an interesting life off the court, and, of course, his exhilarating game, which has earned him an ATP Finals championship.
The 23-year-old has played two semi-finals and one final this season. He was most recently competing at the ATP Acapulco Open where he fell to Cameron Norrie in the semi-finals yesterday but managed to pull off a win in the men’s doubles event today along with his partner and good friend, Feliciano Lopez, a Spanish professional tennis player, against fourth seeds Jean-Julien Rogers and Marcelo Averalo. They won in straight sets 7-5, 6-4.
Tsitsipas is also known for his open show of discomfort and vulnerability, something few athletes are willing to do, especially in tennis, where an opponent would seize on any hint of weakness. This is something that his fans can identify with and appreciate about him. Tsitsipas talked up on those things that could make him look “strange” or “odd” on Noah Rubin’s Behind The Racquet Instagram page back in 2020, demonstrating that he’s still not ready to hide who he is.
Stefanos Tsitsipas pens an emotional note for Feliciano Lopez
“I was an introverted child and didn’t have many friends,” he said in the post. “When I started playing on tour, I thought I would develop friendships but it turned out to be the opposite. Most players keep to themselves. I feel like players don’t want to become friends because they think someone would grab a secret from you to beat you. I guess they’re just too serious about the whole thing. Friends would make travelling less lonely,” wrote Stef.
But what he said back in 2020 doesn’t seem to hold too true in recent times as Tsitsipas seems to have become good friends with partner Feliciano Lopez. The first post of the Twitter thread read, “When I started playing on tour, I thought I would develop friendships but it turned out to be the opposite” with a sad-faced emoticon at the end.
“Tsistipas now” with a smiling-faced emoticon, highlighting how much Tsitsipas has changed since 2020. In the next post of the thread is a photo of Tsitsipas and his quote from BehindTheRacquet along with a picture of his partner Feliciano Lopez.
