The young 17 year old, Coco Gauff reached a career high ranking of 23 earlier this year in June and has won 2 titles on the WTA Tour including one this year at the Emilia Romagna Open in Parma. Gauff had to withdraw from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after testing positive for coronavirus and was thus last seen on the tour at Wimbledon. In London, Gauff was seeded number 20 and reached till the round of 16 where she lost against number 25 seed, Angelique Kerber in straight sets, 4-6, 4-6. Gauff is seeded number 15 at the National Bank Open and will be making her debut in Canada.

Anastasija Sevastova achieved a career high ranking of 11 in October 2018 and has won four titles on the WTA Tour, however, is yet to win one this year. Sevastova last played at the Silicon Valley Classic where she lost in the round of 32, against number 6 seed, Petra Martic, 3-6, 3-6. Sevastova last played in Canada in 2019 where she lost in the round of 64 despite being seeded number 10 against Zhang Shuai, 6-7, 2-6. However, in 2018 in Canada, Sevastova reached the quarter finals and eventually was beaten by number 3 seed, Sloane Stephens.
