Denis Shapovalov vs Pablo Cuevas: Match Preview

Denis Shapovalov
Denis Shapovalov

Shapovalov has disappointed in the clay court stretch of the year so far. The Canadian has barely made it past the first or second round of the tournaments he has played in. In tournaments such as the Estoril Open where he was the first seed, he has lost in the first match he has played. His problem has been his serve where he has leaked double faults aplenty. His constant failure in successfully converting breakpoints has raised questions about his temperament too.

In Geneva, he has shown better application to reach the Semi-final stage. His first victory in this tournament was against Marco Cecchinato. In the Quarter-final match he overcame Laslo Đere in two sets 6-4 6-4. His semifinal opponent is Pablo Cuevas.

Cuevas had failed to qualify into the main draw of the Madrid Open and the Italian Open. In the Geneva Open he has not only qualified into the main draw but also reached the Semi-Final stage of the tournament. In the first round he beat tall American Reilly Opelka. In the second he defeated Arthur Cazaux. In the Quarter-final he overcame Fourth seed Grigor Dimitrov 7-6 6-3.

Shapovalov has overcome the disappointments of the last few tournaments and has started to look good again. His serve is looking better and his one handed backhand potent. Up against the Qualifier Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay, Cuevas will fancy his chances. The thirty five year old veteran has turned back the clock and is looking to secure his first WTA Title. Shapovalov should win this.

Match Prediction: Denis Shapovalov will beat Pablo Cuevas in three sets.
