Fabio Fognini vs Guido Pella: Preview

Fabio Fognini
Fabio Fognini

The Italian hasn’t enjoyed a great season thus far on his favoured clay. Although he managed to reach the quarterfinals of the Monte Carlo Masters, his early exits in Marbella, Madrid, Barcelona and Rome has pushed him further back in the rankings. The 33-year-old has also been involved in share of controversies this year. After nine matches on the dirt, he holds a win/loss record of 4-5 for 2021. Fognini will need to make a deeper run in Geneva, before he heads to Roland Garros, where he is seen as a threat for some top seeded players.

On the other hand, the Argentine is perhaps having the worst season on clay this year. After first round exits in Monte Carlo and Barcelona, the southpaw had to retire from his matches in Madrid and Munich. Given his recent issues with form and injury, it is tough to see the 30-year-old doing any damage at all in this tournament. His only win on this clay for 2021 came in the first round of Munich, where he beat Egor Gerasimov.

Both players will come into this match with not much confidence given how their season has progressed. That said, they love playing on the clay and their unpredictability could make the match interesting. It has all the ingredients to be a low-quality match, but can go the distance. Expect three sets, with plenty of break of serves. In the end, it could come down to the fitness levels of Pella.

Match Prediction: Fabio Fognini should win in three sets.
