The National Bank Open treated tennis fans with several incredible encounters. Especially in the women’s singles, a lot of upsets were seen. In the final clash, Unseeded Camila Giorgi of Italy scripted history with a straight-sets win over fourth seed Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic.
Giorgi launched an attack right from the word go in the all-important finals and won the first set with ease. In the second set, Pliskova tried making a comeback but all her efforts went in vain as the Italian eventually emerged victoriously without much hassle.

Camila, who won her first career 1000-level title was in sublime form as she won a whopping 71% of the first-serve points on the outdoor hard court. As it turns out, this wasn’t the first time when Camila dominated Pliskova. She thrashed Pliskova by 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 in the first round of Eastbourne earlier this year.
After that, she defeated her yet again in the Tokyo Olympics in straight sets by 6-4, 6-23. After the win, Giorgi said, “I really think I was very emotional inside, of course, I’m not the one that shows a lot. It’s just amazing and I’m very happy for what I did this week.”
Crediting her father for her success at the highest level, Giorgi said that all the hard put in by her father is finally paying off. “I have been working all my life with my father, he’s always been with me all the time. We are working hours and hours in the court. Of course, the results should come. I believed it and he believed it, too.”
