Champion of the 2013 Kremlin Cup, Simona Halep makes a winning return to the Kremlin Cup playing in the tournament for the first time since 2013. The Romanian was up against Anastasia Potapova in the first round and beat her comfortably 6-1, 6-4 to advance into the 2nd round. She comes to Moscow from a shocking 3rd round defeat to World No. 100 Aliaksandra Sasnovich at the 2021 Indian Wells.

Veronika Kudermetova has started well in her 2nd main-draw campaign in the Kremlin Cup after having lost in the qualifiers on two occasions. A quarter-finalist in 2019, the 24-year old Russian made a fighting comeback in the first round this week defeating compatriot Oksana Selekhmetava 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-4. She also comes from a 3rd round defeat at the Indian Wells.
