World No. 21 and the 2nd seed at the tournament, Leylah Fernandez was made to work her hardest in the finals by 5th seed Camila Osorio as the two youngsters played out a thrilling final in the 2022 Monterrey Open. Fighting to defend her only WTA title won so far, Leylah won the match 6-7(5), 6-4, 7-6(3) in 2 hours and 52 minutes in what was a perfect end to the tournament in Mexico.

Having taken a 4-1 lead in the first set, the set was almost captured by Leylah before Camila turned the match on its head to force a decider and then won the tiebreaker as well. Leylah again found herself 4-1 ahead in the second set and Camila looked to repeat her first set feats but the Candian was better prepared this time to close the set at 6-4.

In an all to play for the final set, Camila had the championship point at 5-4 but Leylah held her fort to force a final set tiebreaker which saw Camila mess up 4 more championship points before Leylah created her first and managed to win the title without prolonging the match any further to defend her title successfully.

“Today it was a very, very tough match, not only physically or tennis-wise but mentally. Camila, she’s a tough player to play against. She’s very crafty, she does slices, high balls, it’s very unpredictable. I’m very, very happy to have gone through these hard moments, and have fought, found solutions. And Camila, I hope we have many, many more finals like this because without her, I don’t think this tournament, this final, would be [as] special,” said Leylah after the match.
