“He is like really, really fair and has unbelievable sportsmanship,” Emma Raducanu opines that Rafael Nadal would make a great chair umpire
Emma Raducanu, Rafael Nadal
Several tennis players were invited to stage their ideas on who would be a great chair umpire in a rapid-fire session arranged by the Indian Wells Open. Rafael Nadal was chosen by the 19-year-old British Emma Raducanu and another Spaniard, Paula Badosa. Although few tennis players make the switch from the court to the chair of the umpire, however, they believe Nadal is the strongest candidate for the job.
“I’d say, Rafael Nadal,” the 19-year old Emma Raducanu responded when questioned who she thinks will make the finest chair umpire. She also went on to express that the Mallorcan “is like really, really fair” and possesses “Unbelievable Sportsmanship”. “Rafael Nadal, he always plays fair,” Badosa added, echoing Raducanu’s sentiments.
The Mallorcan has received the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award five times in his career, indicating that he is well-known for playing fairly. Given this, who else could be the best fit than the Spaniard? Well, the simple answer would be nobody.
Apart from these two, a number of tennis players have expressed their views on the subject. Nick Kyrgios would be a fantastic fit, according to Coco Gauff, since “it would be cool to watch him in a different position.”
Felix Auger-Aliassime chose Maria Sakkari, whereas Aryna Sabalenka chose Andrey Rublev. When it came time for Swiatek and Ons Jabeur to choose, they both felt that Auger-Aliassime would make an excellent umpire, but Tsitsipas chose his old inspiration and former World No. 1, Ana Ivanovic.
Paula Badosa, Iga Swiatek to fight in the quarterfinals of Indian Wells 2022
From reaching the Semifinals of Adelaide international and the Australian Open 2022 to establishing her dominance over the Qatar Open, Swiatek has been in tremendous form. She advanced to the quarterfinals of the Indian Wells Open after defeating Anhelina Kalinina, Clara Tauson, and former World No. 1, Angelique Kerber. The Pole won all three matches after coming back from a set down. In the second match of the women’s singles quarterfinals, fourth seed Iga Swiatek and the 27-year old Madison Keys will lock horns against each other.
This year, defending champion Badosa began her title defense against Tereza Martincova in straight sets after receiving a first-round bye. Afterwards, in the third and fourth rounds, she defeated compatriot Sara Sorribes Tormo and 2021 US Open runner-up Leylah Fernandez, respectively. Thus, she once again earned herself a place in the collision of the last eight.
Nevertheless, With the last eight set in the women’s singles, the crowd favorite Iga Swiatek and Paula Badosa know better than ever who stand between them and the title.
