After a string of early exits in his previous tournaments, 2013 champion, John Isner has found his rhythm in Houston. The American had to dig deep and save a match point en route to his win against Steve Johnson in the second round. He then won another three-setter against Frances Tiafoe in the quarter-finals. The fourth seed won 79% of his first serves and blasted 16 aces past his compatriot to win 6-4, 2-6, 6-3.

Cristian Garin began his title defense by snapping a 5 match losing streak and has now notched up a hat-trick of wins. The Chilean had to go the distance in all his matches so far, and the most emphatic of his wins came in the quarter-finals when he defeated reigning Indian Wells champion, Taylor Fritz 6-2, 6(5)-7, 6-3 to extend his unbeaten streak in Houston to 8 matches.
