Andy Roddick is an American tennis professional who redefined the sport of tennis for many in the USA and the world. He is the one who inspired many young American boys and girls to chase the elusive dream of winning a Major in their career. He is still the last American male to be able to clinch a Grand Slam singles title.

Andy Roddick was born in the United States in 1982 in Omaha, Nebraska. He turned pro in 2000. He enjoyed a successful career that spanned over 15 years, during which he helped popularize the sport around the world.

At the age of 17 years, he thought about quitting tennis as he lost six matches in a row during his junior playing days. However, his coach Tarek Benhabiles persuaded him to continue. He subsequently won the junior singles US Open and Australian Open titles in 2000.

Andy Roddick showed his prowess when he defeated 14-time Grand Slam champion Pete Sampras at the age of 18 years in the Miami Open in 2001. He subsequently defeated Michael Chang in the second round of the French Open 2001. This match was won in five sets by young Andy Roddick.

His spirited performances got the whole of the USA excited. His favorite court was the hard court as he made some major breakthroughs on this surface. He was also known for his powerful serve. The American once held the record for the fastest serve, clocking it at 155 mph (249 km/h). He was known for using a lot of topspin on both of his serves, and his twist serve was very high kicking.

Many believe Andy Roddick to be one of the finest tennis players the United States has ever produced. He is often compared with the likes of John McEnroe, Pete Sampras, and Andre Agassi, who made the tennis sport popular in the country. He is well-liked among American tennis fans. In addition, he is the only male American tennis professional who has won a Grand Slam singles title in the previous 20 years.

He did, however, win his sole Grand Slam singles title in 2003. At the age of 21, he won the US Open men’s singles title, defeating Juan Carlos Ferrero in the final 6-3, 7-6, 6-3. Later in the same year, he was ranked No.1 in the world. He became the first American since Andre Agassi in 1999 to end the season as World No.1. He also became the youngest American to take the top spot on the leaderboard.

Andy Roddick also won 31 ATP singles titles during his illustrious career. He was instrumental in the United States of America’s victorious campaign in the Davis Cup 2007. The American also played in the Wimbledon final thrice during his career, however, lost to Roger Federer each time thus shattering his dream of ever winning The Championships. He was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2017.
