Rafael Nadal produced a comeback from the top draw, as he came back from two sets down to claim a five set win over Daniil Medvedev in the finals of Australian Open 2022. This was Nadal’s only second Australian Open title, and the one that places him in an elite category involving four male tennis players.
Rafael Nadal completed his Double Career Grandslam, after claiming a record 21st major title. Several tennis stars and legends have expressed their shock and delight at Rafael Nadal winning an unexpected title in Melbourne.
After Rafael Nadal claimed his 21st major title, much has been spoken about the GOAT race, involving Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic. Now, the Spaniard has the advantage over his rivals, as he leads the charts for the most major titles. Australian tennis player, Bernard Tomic weighed on the same and gave his two cents on the GOAT debate, which is one of the most controversial topics in tennis.
Bernard Tomic backs Rafael Nadal to win Roland Garros this year
Rafael Nadal came back from a career-ending foot injury to claim his second title in Melbourne. Bernard Tomic, in an exclusive interview to Blic, believes that Rafael Nadal will be the GOAT. Tomic thinks that a rejuvenated Nadal will be tough to stop this year.
Rafael Nadal stands a chance to extend his lead in terms of most majors won, as he could claim his 22nd major at the French Open. Roland Garros has generally been Nadal’s territory, as he has claimed 13 titles on the red Parisian clay.
“After this whole situation with Novak … I believe that Rafael Nadal will be “GOAT”.Ā It will be difficult to restrain him this year.Ā I feel that in the end, they will have the most Grand Slams,” said Tomic.
“Nadal will most likely win Roland Garros as well because he is the best on the slag.Ā I love all three of them, Nole and Rafa and Roger, but I think Nadal will go down in history as the best ever.Ā It’s also because I can’t win 25 Grand Slams, ha, ha, ha – the Australian laughed out loud,” he added.
At this moment, it seems too early to predict the outcome of the GOAT race. However, with question marks about Djokovic’s involvement because of his vaccination status and Federer’s long absence from injury, Rafael Nadal certainly has the edge.
