Magnus Carlsen BOYCOTTS Australian Open
The world champion Magnus Carlsen showed some support to Novak Djokovic when he shunned the Australian Open 2022. The sequence of controversies at this year’s Australian Open started way before the first match of the tournament.
The arrival of an unvaccinated Djokovic to Melbourne was met with great anger by the Australian people towards the Australian Government, the Victorian Government, and even Tennis Australia.
Following this, Immigration Minister Alex Hawke decided to access his power to deport Djokovic out of Australia. This barbaric decision made a lot of Djokovic fans and fans of tennis boycott the Australian Open.
However, even in the absence of the defending champion and the world No.1 the tournament turned out to be really interesting. Rafael Nadal made his comeback after an injury and defeated the young gun Daniil Medvedev in a 5-set thriller in the final.
When World Champion Magnus Carlsen while playing the Tata Steel Chess 2022 was asked if he was watching the tennis on the other screen. To which he replied by saying, “Oh No! I am boycotting this year. It’s been a tradition to always watch the final on the day of the last round and sometimes if I played if the final has been really really long and I play a relatively shorter game, I can even watch some after the game game is finished. But I am boycotting this year, unfortunately. But I did follow a little bit of the score of the final, so is your boy butchering it? (on Medvedev losing after being up two sets)”
