Earlier, at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Kyrgios reached the quarter-finals before going down fighting against Rafael Nadal. The World No. 132 played in an elevated, drama-filled match with the 21-time Grand Slam champion, but lost 7-6 (0) 5-7 6-4. The match eventually ended with Kyrgios slamming his racket into the floor after shaking hands with Rafael Nadal, following which he used swear words and dragged Hollywood comedian Ben Stiller into his drama. Ball boy Tei Park was forced to crouch for shelter when the racket abruptly rebounded near the arena wall. However, Kyrgios eventually used Instagram to track down the ball boy’s identity and apologised to him.

Amidst all of these controversies, it appears that Kyrgios has finally found his stride this season, as he is consistently putting up strong performances in the ‘Sunshine Double.’

The 26-year-old expressed his emotions after reaching the third round of the Masters series tournament in Miami, in an interview after the match. “I mean obviously, he came out hard in the start and that’s tennis. You know, a couple of points can swing a momentum change like that,” He said.

The Australian star went on to reveal that his strategy was to not allow Andrey Rublev to unleash his powerful forehand and backhand, which proved to be rather fruitful. He went on to remark that he can “lose to anyone” and “beat anyone,” elaborating on his erratic nature. “I know that he’s a hard player that relies on a bit of rhythm, so I just tried to keep the points short and sharp, just played aggressive. I can’t let him get on too many groundstrokes, but I’m just having my performance, whether it’s 7-6 in the third or something like this, I’m just happy to get through. You know, a top-10 or top-20 or top-1000, I don’t really care. I can lose to anyone on any given day and I can beat anyone, it’s been the story of my career, so I’m just happy to get through.”

Nick Kyrgios’ giant-killing streak continued in the Miami Open second round with a thrashing of fifth seed Andrey Rublev. Kyrgios’ power game overpowered Rublev, who had won 16 of his last 18 matches prior to his battle with the world No. 102. He served 10 aces and hit 20 winners throughout the two sets. However, the Australian sensation took just 52 minutes to demolish the world No. 7 in straight sets, 6-3 6-0, setting up a thrilling third-round match on Monday against big-hitting Italian Fabio Fognini.
