Australian Open champion Ash Barty is by far the best player on the current WTA tour. She has been very consistent on tour since the last year and walks in as the favorite in whichever tournament she plays. She has won 2 out of the last 3 majors and is the current World No.1. Infact, she leads Aryna Sabalenka, the World No.2 by almost 3000 points.

Barty hasn’t competed since winning the Australian Open and was expected to headline Indian Wells and Miami but a week before the tournament, the Aussie announced her withdrawal from the Golden swing saying her body hasn’t recovered 100% yet.

“I wanted to share an update on my schedule for the coming months,” Barty said in a statement. “Unfortunately my body has not recovered the way I’d hoped after the Australian Open and I have not been able to adequately prepare for Indian Wells and Miami.”

She further said that she doesn’t believe she is at the level necessary to win big and hence made the decision. She also expressed her disappointment in not competing at the Golden swing.

“I don’t believe I am at the level necessary to win these events and as a result, I have decided to withdraw from both tournaments. I love these events and am sad not to be there competing but getting my body right must be my focus,” she said.

“My aim is to represent my country at the upcoming Billie Jean King Cup event in April. After missing the BJK Cup last year I can’t wait to wear the green and gold again,” she said.

Australia is the highest ranked team at the Billie Jean King Cup courtesy Barty’s No.1 ranking. With Ajla Tomljanovic, she’ll look to bring the cup home for the very first time since 1974.
