“I don’t close that window” Juan Martin Del Potro hints at a possible comeback, hopes for a “miracle”

Juan Martin Del Potro made a hopeful remark in an interview insinuating that he may make a comeback to the tour. Del Potro is a professional tennis player from Argentina who has won one grand slam. In 2009, he won the US Open, defeating Rafael Nadal in the semifinals and Roger Federer, the five-time defending winner, in the final.
Del Potro’s career has been driven by each new cruel bit of misfortune he has had to endure for most of the last 16 years, with multiple career-threatening injuries and times when he really considered retirement. But, by the power of his spirit and talent, he always managed to get through those difficult times and reclaim his due place on the list.
In the few days before Juan was set to return to professional tennis on home ground at a small ATP 250 event in Buenos Aires, the reality of what his first appearance in two and a half years, but fell short and was defeated convincingly by Federico Delbonis 1-6, 3-6. Before the tournament, he stated that his return was “more a farewell than a return.”
After the match, an emotional Del Potro addressed fans, “Possibly we may not meet again. Today I gave everything I had, until the last point. I’m happy because my last game was probably on a tennis court in front of all of you, and not in a press conference.” He did say, though, that he intended to “leave the window open” for Rio de Janeiro at the moment. However, he later withdrew from the Rio Open 2022, confirming his much-anticipated retirement.
“A miracle can happen” believes Juan Martin del Potro
Del Potro made a rather hopeful statement in a recent interview with StarPlus, pointing at a possible comeback from his retirement, following what appeared to be a tragic conclusion to his career after pulling out of Rio Open. He stated that he intends to keep the window open since miracles can transpire.
“I don’t close that window so that a miracle can happen as it happened with Murray,” he said, referring to Andy Murray‘s comeback to tennis after a long struggle with injuries. He went on to say, “Tennis is my passion. When we came back from the Davis Cup, I said: ‘Here’s the cup, now I’m going to sleep peacefully, But to get there, I had to go through a path of suffering and ugly things,” referring to his comeback year in 2016 after enduring injuries.
“I felt it was time to say that I was playing. It was time to put an end to this suffering and this nightmare that I have been living since the day I had the operation,” he added. The Argentine then made a very heartwarming and hopeful statement, “I have to heal my leg. How can I not go out for a bike ride with my son? Or play tennis if he wants one day? I would like to be an active father.”
Del Potro has yet to reveal which tournament he might make a comeback at, but for now, all that matters is that he closed the interview on a positive one, providing some reassurance to his supporters.
